About the Travel Clinic
Michigan State University Travel Clinic services are available to travelers over the age of 18 and healthy children over the age of 12 that weigh at least 100 lbs. It is recommended that Study Abroad students use the Travel Clinic prior to departure.
Visit the MSU Travel Clinic two months prior to travel, if possible. Certain immunizations will need to be given over a period of several months.
The Travel Clinic subscribes to services to get constant updates to remain current with travel recommendations. We are also a designated Yellow Fever vaccine site. Unfortunately, not all medical providers have the time to remain current in regards to travel recommendations or are able to stock travel vaccines. Therefore, prior to scheduling appointments with your medical provider for travel purposes, check to see if they are aware of the current recommendations and have the appropriate vaccines for your travel destination.
Travelers are seen by appointment only. Know your itinerary. Providers can give you the most appropriate, useful information only if you know the regions and countries in which you plan to travel.
In order to evaluate which health care services you need, please bring the following records to your travel appointment:
- Completed "Travel Vaccine Planner."
- Routine and past travel immunization history (record),
- Names and dosages of any medications you are currently taking, and
- Medical history, including allergies and/or other chronic conditions
Prior to your appointment, check with your insurance company to see if they cover any part of your visit or vaccines.
Making Appointments
Healthcare providers see travel patients Monday through Friday, year-round. Call 517.353.3161 to request an appointment or to get more information.
At Your Appointment
Please check in at room 347 Olin Health Center, located on East Circle Drive between Berkey Hall and Morrill Hall. A video about travel health and safety is available while you wait. Completion of the Travel Vaccine Planner (which is available at http://travelclinic.msu.edu/beforeappt/vplanner.html) will enable the provider to determine the appropriate health services or immunizations needed.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time to allow for check in and time to view a video presentation about travel health and safety.
The focus of your appointment will include:
- Information on health and safety risks
- Counseling tailored to your personal lifestyle and medical history
- Immunizations and prescriptions for certain travel medications. Pre-immunization counseling is required before shots are administered.
